Walk For Rice 2011

On 16 Sept 2011, I participated in the Walk For Rice charity event again. This was my second time joining this event and there was a slight difference in the route.

The weather was very kind and I had a fun time enjoying the morning walk with my friends and meeting those I hardly see (different department, libraries etc). The sky was cloudy and there was a good breeze going. The walk was 5km (slightly longer than the previous year) but with good company, it didn't feel long.

So in total, we had raised 17, 500 bowls of rice grains. *cheer* I raised 50 bowls!!


This was found in the goodie bag given. A yellow stretchy elastic band to tone the arms. I need this badly!

Library Book Sale 2011

I volunteered for the Library Book Sale on 24th July 2011. Not for the actual event but the pre-selection for one of the charity groups - SINDA.

A few of us came together as a group and spent the morning choosing books and 'grabbing' as fast as we can. Half were selectors, the other half were packers.

All in all, it was a tiring morning but a very happy one working and volunteering with friends.

Little introduction:

The Charity Book Donation is a precursor to the NLB's highly popular annual Library Book Sale. Held on 23 and 24 July 2011 at the Singapore Expo Hall 4A, the Library Book Sale this year will offer a wide collection of more than 355,000 used books and magazines in the four official languages.

Starting from $1.00, these items are categorised under 'Adults', 'Young People' and 'Children' collections. Under each group, they are sub-divided into 'Fiction' and 'Non-Fiction'. Adult English non-fiction books will be sub-categorised under eight specific categories namely, Arts, Business, Cookery, Family, Health & Gardening, Pets & Animals, Recreation, and Travel Guides and a General category. Popular magazines such as Vogue, Women's Weekly, and parenting magazine Ma Ma Bao Bei among other titles will be on sale.

The Library Book Sale is open to all members of the public. There is no limit on the number of items that can be purchased. Items will be replenished at regular intervals over the two days of the event.

Walk For Rice 2010

On 22 Nov 2010, we had a Walk For Rice charity event. We were split into different groups and the route started from the NL Building.

8.30am and off we went! It was rather hot but I had company and spent the time chatting with my friends. Frequent water breaks, along with the wind and some shade, made the blistering morning sun bearable.

Some beautiful sights were captured along the walk and if it wasn't for this route, I probably would never have gone to those spots.

All in all, it was a satisfactory morning exercise with a bunch of goodness thrown in.

PDKRA - Book Exchange 2010

Each of us has to clock hours for PDKRA. For FY10, I signed up for a number of different activities.

Things I have done so far:
- 10k Fathers Read: Storytelling in an assigned MRT cabin
- Volunteering at Spastic Children's Association of Singapore

- D&D 2010

Book Exchange: 25 April 2010 @ NL

I helped out on two days, the pre-BE and on the actual day. I'm tasked to be a Screener so my role was to unpack the numerous ... numerous.. numerous amount of boxes and placed the books in their respective bins. i.e Adult Chinese Fiction, Children English Non-Fiction etc

The job was tiring and back-breaking but it was fun working with a crazy bunch of ER J libs. It made the time past faster!

I had multiple roles on the actual day (we had to wear our official Tee). We had to keep opening new boxes to replenish the bins so it was non-stop pushing of trolleys. Some patrons needed help with directions and toward the end, I helped out at the counters; retrieving the coupons and packing the books for the customers.

It was a fruitful experience! This was my first Book Exchange and even though the work was tough, we had a very good crowd and it's a great give-back for the public.
